Heart Opening Prayer

by Rev. Sam Trumbore, 6/4/95

O Thou who I do not know
Stranger who comes to comfort me in my time of need
unfamiliar face sharing an encouraging smile
Mysterious spirit of life animating my bones
Opening my eyes to see and opening my ears to hear
Dwell within us and around us this day.

We come together each week
seeking to know thee better and
reaffirm the truth we have discovered,
gradually opening like the petals of a flower responding to the sun.
We come with light hearts as we delight
in the joys of cloudless mornings and dramatic thunderstorms.
We come with heavy hearts as we feel the burdens
of time's erosion of our bodies, minds and spirits.

Protect us from the clawing of insatiable needs and
the fearfulness of threatening shadows.
Open our hearts to life's constant pulse of creation.
Open our hearts to the joy of our interconnectedness.
Open our hearts to the stream of love which flows around us.

May we be blessed this day, this week, this month, this year, this lifetime,
With an awareness of tremendous beauty, possibility, infinite transcendence.
There is always so much more than we will ever know,
and our unconditional human value is unlimited by our knowing.

May every one of us find the peace, the love, the joy, the serenity
Of which we are already made.
